Academic Support Provided By Guilford ABC

  • Professional tutoring available in all academic subjects throughout school year
  • Weekly help provided by Yale University student tutors
  • Strong support team for each individual scholar includes both academic and student life advisors, resident director, involved board members and alumnae
  • Guilford ABC staff and board maintain a strong and positive working relationship with high school staff

College Preparation Support

  • SAT and ACT preparation
  • Professional college counseling for each scholar starting in junior year
  • Involved Guilford ABC alumnae support network

Summer Enrichment Programs

  • Each scholar encouraged to build a strong resume through a variety of summer experiences after freshman, sophomore and junior years.
  • Student Life and Academic advisors help scholars explore summer options and apply to appropriate programs. Guilford ABC allocates a set amount of funding to help with each summer’s program costs and assists scholars in seeking additional scholarship aid.
  • Sample of recent scholars’ summer enrichment choices: Girls Who Code summer immersion at New York University (2019), Envision Law Program at Stanford University (2019), Medical/Science program at Harvard University (2019), NASA program at New York University (2018), Study abroad in India, France, Spain, China, Peru and Chile (2017-18-19), Two-week intensive creative writing program at Syracuse University (2016).

Guilford ABC: A Home Away From Home

  • Scholars live together as a family in a home owned by the program, staffed with a resident director, and a part-time cook
  • Resident director, who is an experienced teacher, lives on-site in her own apartment within the house
  • Scholars eat home-cooked dinners together nightly during the week
  • Many group recreational activities including movies, trips, sports events, concerts, theater outings, birthday celebrations, swimming lessons, gym memberships
  • Each scholar has a host family with whom she spends an overnight each month, sharing in the family’s activities
  • Scholars are provided train transportation to and from their homes one weekend a month, and a weekly $20 allowance

Guilford, Connecticut: The Community

Guilford is a shoreline town founded in 1639 with 22,000 residents. Downtown Guilford is listed on National Register of Historic Places. A large community center, town green, arts center, and public library are all within walking distance of ABC house. There is also a public beach and plenty of hiking trails.
