ABC Host Families

Our host family program is one of the most important community links for our scholars. Host families welcome a new GABC student into their home as a member of their family one weekend each month, ideally throughout her four years of high school. Host families offer scholars a “home away from home” and an opportunity to experience the community by participating in normal everyday family activities – from chores to family meals to social functions and sports activities. This link is tremendously important to our GABC students, who often form strong familial relationships with their host family and certainly look forward to these monthly get aways. The relationships between host families and scholars are incredibly significant, and frequently result in life-long friendships.

“It was fantastic to get to know T-Jauni and our family benefited greatly by her presence and influence. It can’t have been easy to live away from home and enter a new school as a sophomore, almost a year younger than the other sophomores who all knew each other! However T-Jauni’s maturity and amazing ability to adapt to living away from home, a new school, and new people was astounding. She did well in her classes, tried out for and made the Dance Team, and made friends. “Host families are one of the best aspects of this program. When I first met my Host family, I was nervous. They had 3 boys which I thought would be difficult, and I was unsure whether I would connect with the family as a whole. However I had nothing to worry about, I instantly clicked with them and I’ve since enjoyed every time we’ve spent together. They have taught me how to ride a boat, taken me to Boston to visit colleges, helped me with my resume and my driving. I have a great relationship with my host family and I know they will always have a special place in my heart.” — Julia

“My host family has truly been my rock throughout my high school career. They are one of the first people I tell my good news to. They are always there to listen to me when times were rough and I needed some advice. If I did not feel comfortable talking about “teenager stuff” with my host parents, my host sisters were right there to listen. They understood me and welcomed me as I was. My second family doesn’t stop with the host parents and sisters, but the grandparents (Meme and Papa), and all the cousins. Meme and Papa have really taken me in as their own grandchild. I can go on and on about my host family, but they are just genuine, good-hearted people that have welcomed me into their home and made my experience in Guilford ten times better.
